May the Fourth: What Star Wars Teaches Us About Data Projects
MVP focus, governance from day one, and data democratisation, told through the metaphor of the saga's most expansive universe.
May the Fourth be with you all.
Like many of you, I absolutely love the Star Wars saga. Beyond the epic space battles and iconic characters, I often see powerful parallels between building that incredible universe and launching successful data projects right here in our own galaxy. Think about it: is not the journey of deploying a new app or AI agent as thrilling as the Death Star’s trench run?
This continuously expanding space opera’s original trilogy started centred on Luke, Leia, Han, R2, and Vader. It told a compelling, core story before expanding outwards. Similarly, our most impactful data projects often begin by addressing a specific, critical need, delivering value quickly before scaling up. Paraphrasing Vader: “If you only knew the power of the MVP.” We must always start with a focused vision that tackles a real, tangible problem.
And just as the Star Wars universe established its fundamental rules early on, how the Force works, the nature of hyperspace, the might of the Empire, strong data projects need solid governance from the outset. Defining these core principles, structures, and standards allows our data ecosystems to grow coherently and reliably. Paraphrasing Master Yoda: “Data Governance is strong in this one.” Indeed, strong governance does not hinder nor turn things “bureaucratic”. It creates the foundation upon which we can build, innovate, and add new capabilities, ensuring everything works together harmoniously.
Neither Cassian Andor, Grand Admiral Thrawn, nor Ahsoka Tano were created by George Lucas, but they are fantastic characters whose stories make the whole thing richer, more enjoyable, more inspiring. As other authors and fans inserted their perspectives, co-creating plots and storylines and adding value to us all, data democratisation comes into my mind. The same way the rebellion belongs to the whole galaxy, great data projects do not belong to a single centralised team. Those expand on their own, driven by users’ needs, specific commercial goals, and developed by data-savvy padawans, knights, and masters. It is our job as leaders to nourish these heroes and support them to scale effectively and confidently.
What parallels do you see between your favourite stories and the world of technology, data, and AI?
May the Force be with us, always.
